Q: Can I keep an account out of my debt settlement program?
A: Keeping an account out of your debt settlement program may have an adverse effect on our ability to negotiate your other accounts. The credit card companies or collection agencies oftentimes will refuse negotiations on the grounds, "If the consumer could pay back that creditor, then they could have paid us back as well." It is for this reason that we advise you to include all credit card accounts with balances in excess of $1,000 in the program, and to only use any accounts not included in the program for emergency purposes.
Q: Does doing debt settlement hurt my credit?
A: Yes, doing debt settlement does in fact temporarily lower your credit score because you must go delinquent or miss payments before the banks are willing to settle. A lot of people are already delinquent so debt settlement can only help their credit.
Q: How long is my credit hurt for?
A: Usually 12 to 18 months after settling your account your credit score will return to where it was or close too it.
Q: Can I go to jail for not paying my bills?
A: No you cannot go to jail for not paying unsecured debt. There is no debtors prison!
Q-: Is it okay to give my personal checking info over the phone to a bank or a collection agency to pay for a settlement?
A: Yes this is okay. The bank or collection agency cannot take any more or any less money than what is indicated on the settlement letter. Usually banks and collection agencies will record the call for everyone's protection and waive the processing fee.
